Tee Pee Curios in Tucumcari, New Mexico Route 66 Roadside Attraction and Souvenir Gift Shop

2. Tee Pee Curios

Tee Pee Curios in Tucumcari is one of those classic Route 66 stops where the fun starts before you even step inside. This quirky teepee-shaped building doubles as a souvenir shop and roadside attraction, offering a mix of kitschy charm and Route 66 nostalgia that’s hard to resist.

The building’s standout feature is its teepee entrance, a nod to the roadside architecture that made Route 66 famous. But that’s not all—after the sun goes down, the iconic neon sign lights up the night, adding a splash of vintage glow to the Tucumcari skyline. This neon beauty was first added around 1960 and got a fresh update in 2003, thanks to the New Mexico Route 66 Neon Sign Restoration Project.

Big Kachina Statue in Gallup, New Mexico Route 66 Roadside Attraction

3. Big Kachina Statue

Kachina dolls, also known as Hopi katsina figures, are wooden carvings rich in tradition, used to teach children and new brides about katsinas—spirit beings believed to control the natural world. These figures are more than just art; they’re storytellers, passing down important cultural knowledge through generations.

Since the 1950s, Gallup, New Mexico, has proudly displayed its own Big Kachina Statue, a towering yellow sculpture that’s been a Route 66 landmark for decades. Once perched outside a visitor center, the statue stood on a base that proclaimed “GALLUP NEW MEXICO THE INDIAN CAPITAL” or “GALLUP NEW MEXICO HEART OF INDIAN COUNTRY.”

Today, the Big Kachina Statue has a new look—its base is gone, but it still stands tall on extended legs in front of a small park and the local fire office. This impressive figure continues to greet travelers and remind them of Gallup’s deep ties to Native American culture and its significance as a stop along Route 66.

Route 66 Musical Highway in Tijeras, New Mexico

4. Route 66 Musical Highway

The Route 66 Musical Highway is one of those delightfully quirky stops that adds a bit of magic to your road trip. Just outside Albuquerque, there’s a stretch of road where your tires can actually play “America the Beautiful” as you drive over specially constructed rumble strips.

To get the tune just right, you’ll need to line up your car’s right-side tires with the white line and cruise along at exactly 45 miles per hour. These Musical Highways are a clever bit of engineering—using rumble strips that create vibrations and sound as your tires pass over them, turning the road into a giant musical instrument.

Unfortunately, this unique attraction isn’t what it used to be. The road has mostly been paved over, and the signs pointing to it have been removed. But if you’re lucky, you might still catch a snippet of the song as you drive by. So keep your ears open—you never know when you might stumble upon this hidden musical gem on Route 66!

Sculptor Tom Coffin was commissioned to create this eye-catching piece. The design, all sleek and chrome, is inspired by the tail fins of classic 1950s and ’60s cars. At the top, you’ll spot a stylized “66,” while the sandstone base features a winding two-lane road, symbolizing the endless journey of Route 66.

This must-see New Mexico roadside attraction is located right along the road in front of the Tucumcari Convention Center and just a stone’s throw from the town’s Route 66 Museum. La Cita Restaurant in Tucumcari, New Mexico Route 66 Restaurant

7. La Cita Restaurant

Hungry in Tucumcari? Just keep an eye out for the giant sombrero—La Cita Restaurant is the place to be for tasty New Mexican favorites, all tucked away behind a sombrero-shaped entrance right on Route 66.

La Cita first opened its doors on Route 66 back in 1940, and in 1961, it moved to its current location, bringing along the now-iconic 30-foot-tall, 15-foot-wide stucco sombrero entrance.

Before you head inside, take a moment to admire this fun novelty building-turned-roadside attraction, along with the bright, rotating neon sign that’s become a Tucumcari landmark. Built between 1963 and 1972 by International Fiberglass in Venice, California, these big guys share a similar design, with signature stances that made them perfect for catching the eyes of passing drivers. Originally, they stood outside muffler shops and other businesses, drawing attention from the road. Dressed in blue pants, a red and white western button-up shirt, and a white Stetson cowboy hat, he’s the picture of classic Western style. He’s even got a holster with a pistol strapped around his waist. If you look closely, you might notice a few bullet holes he’s picked up over the years—proof that this fiberglass giant has seen his fair share of action while keeping watch over Gallup!

If you’re hoping to spend the night, be sure to book well in advance!

For those lucky enough to snag a room, you’ll be treated to warm hospitality, cozy beds, a touch of Route 66 nostalgia, and a prime location near all the must-see spots in Tucumcari. 10. The Ghost Town of Glenrio

Glenrio is a fascinating ghost town that straddles the Texas-New Mexico state line, a once-thriving stop along Route 66 that time has left behind. In its heyday, Glenrio buzzed with activity, serving as a bustling hub for travelers on the Mother Road. But when Interstate 40 bypassed the town in the 1960s, Glenrio slowly faded into disrepair, becoming the quiet, haunting place it is today.

Despite its decline, Glenrio has become a popular destination for Route 66 enthusiasts, offering a unique glimpse into the past. Visitors can wander through the abandoned motels, gas stations, and restaurants that once lined this stretch of the highway, imagining what life was like when the town was alive with the sound of engines and the chatter of road-weary travelers.
