Step back into the 1950s and 1960s for an evening that blends history, storytelling, and performance at Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center.
The Green Book Experience is an immersive program that explores how the Negro Motorist Green Book helped Black travelers navigate segregation-era America. The evening begins with a guided tour of Greenwood Rising, where guests learn about the legacy of Black Wall Street and the strength and resilience of Tulsa’s Greenwood community.
Following the tour, guests will enjoy a catered meal before a theatrical performance inspired by the era when the Green Book was essential for safe travel. Set in the 1950s–1960s, the performance brings to life the realities African American travelers faced—relying on the Green Book to find safe lodging, dining, and services while navigating sundown towns and restricted spaces across the country.
Through historical context and live performance, the program highlights the ingenuity, caution, and community networks that made mobility—and survival—possible during Jim Crow. Designed to educate and engage, The Green Book Experience offers an opportunity to reflect on the history of travel, resilience, and connection along America’s roads, including Route 66.
