Celebrate the transportation history that shaped Route 66 at Route 66 Trains, Planes and Automobiles, a family-friendly event hosted by the Amarillo Railroad Museum.
At the heart of the event is a detailed HO-scale railroad layout recreating the Santa Fe Railway across the Texas Panhandle—from Canadian, Texas to Clovis, New Mexico—set in the 1950–1970s era. Visitors can also explore an extensive G-scale garden railroad, which will be operating during the event. Kids and adults alike will have the chance to run model trains on the G-scale layout and tour the HO-scale display.
Beyond the models, guests can step inside real railroad cars from a U.S. Department of Energy nuclear transport train, offering a rare look at rail history up close.
Additional highlights include classic automobiles on display from regional car clubs and information about the local air and space museum, tying together the trains, planes, and automobiles theme.
Just across US 60, the active BNSF Railway mainline sees more than 100 trains pass daily—providing a real-time backdrop of roaring locomotives to complement the exhibits.
This all-ages event offers hands-on learning, transportation history, and plenty of Route 66 spirit in the Texas Panhandle.
