As you travel the iconic Route 66 through New Mexico, there’s one event that will truly take your road trip to new heights—the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta! Held every October, this week-long celebration fills the skies with hundreds of colorful hot air balloons, creating a breathtaking sight against the Sandia Mountains. Whether you’re an early bird catching the morning ascension or staying for the evening’s glow shows, it’s a feast for the eyes and a true bucket-list experience.

While you’re in town, Route 66 enthusiasts can double down on the fun. The festival is just a short drive from Central Avenue—Route 66’s path through Albuquerque—where you can explore neon signs, vintage diners, and Route 66 history.
