The Wigwam Motel in San Bernardino, California (Wigwam Village #7), is one of the most recognizable sights along Route 66. Built in 1949 as the last of Frank Redford’s Wigwam Villages, its rows of towering concrete teepees have been catching the eyes of travelers for decades. Redford, who first patented the wigwam-shaped motel design in the 1930s, went on to construct seven of these villages across the country. Only three remain today: Village #2 in Cave City, Kentucky; Village #6 in Holbrook, Arizona (also on Route 66); and this one in San Bernardino.

During its early years, the San Bernardino property offered travelers a novel and comfortable stay in a 32-foot-tall wigwam arranged around a grassy courtyard and fire pit. Like many Mother Road businesses, the motel struggled after Route 66 was bypassed by the interstate, and by the 1980s it had gained a reputation for cheap hourly rentals, waterbeds, and even a neon sign that famously urged guests to “Do it in a Wigwam.”

Its story took a better turn in 2003, when the Patel family purchased the property and carefully restored it to its mid-century charm. They repainted the structures, renovated the interiors, and returned the motel to its place as a Route 66 landmark. The restoration earned them the National Historic Route 66 Federation’s Cyrus Avery Award in 2005, and the site was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

Today, the Wigwam Motel once again welcomes travelers with 19 concrete teepees, each outfitted with modern amenities like WiFi, cable television, air conditioning, and a mini-fridge. Guests will a few find vintage cars staged around the lot, a nod to the golden days of road tripping, along with a classic kidney-shaped pool to cool off in. Each unit has its own parking space right outside the door, making it easy to unload luggage or snap a quick photograph.
