Trailer Perk Coffee is a retro-styled drive-through coffee shop sitting right on Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri. The building is painted deep teal with a bright pink neon sign out front, and a six-foot flamingo holding a coffee cup in its toes marks the entrance to the drive-through lane. There are two lanes: a standard drive-through for ordering on the spot, and an express lane for those who ordered and paid ahead.

The menu leans into creative, house-crafted drinks available hot or iced. Standouts include the Route 66 Kicker (a quad shot with black and white mocha), the Airstream (butter pecan latte), the Flamingo (white coffee with white chocolate raspberry mocha), and the Happy Camper (toasted marshmallow mocha). Traditional options like Americanos, chai tea, hot chocolate, and yerba maté round things out.

The business started as a coffee trailer at a local farmers market in 2017, founded by Washington transplant Amber Ottoson. It moved into its current brick-and-mortar location in 2023.

But the spot has more history than its relatively recent opening suggests. The lot was the original home of Red’s Giant Hamburg, widely credited as the first drive-through restaurant ever. Red’s opened along what was then Route 66 in 1947, closed in 1984, and the original building came down in 1997. A rebuilt version opened on Sunshine Street in 2019 but has since closed as well. It’s fitting that a drive-through business now occupies the original site. A replica of the Red’s Giant Hamburg sign stands at the Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park, also in Springfield, if you want to see a nod to the original.
