Where can you park?
A free parking lot for the Lincoln Tomb is located adjacent to the tomb, just to the west of the custodian’s residence. Parking spaces for RV’s and other large vehicles are available.
When can you visit?
The interior site (the tomb building) is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (times may vary seasonally). The cemetery grounds themselves may open earlier depending on season.
This site is closed on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. It is open for Lincoln’s Birthday, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Columbus Day, and Veteran’s Day.
What will you see at the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield, Illinois?
Visitors to the Lincoln Tomb can explore one of the most important historic sites in the state. The exterior features a towering 117-foot granite obelisk surrounded by bronze statues representing the major branches of the Union Army (Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Navy). At the entrance, you’ll find a bronze bust of Abraham Lincoln, a favorite photo spot where many visitors gently touch the nose for good luck.
Inside, you can walk through the rotunda and corridors lined with polished marble, bronze plaques, and replicas of famous Lincoln statues. The burial chamber contains the president’s sarcophagus, along with the resting places of Mary Todd Lincoln and three of their sons. Interpretive signs throughout the interior help tell the story of Lincoln’s life, legacy, and the tomb’s construction.
The surrounding Oak Ridge Cemetery grounds are peaceful and scenic, making the area a meaningful place to reflect on Lincoln’s impact and to experience a piece of American history up close.
