Know Before You Go
To make the most of your visit to Stonehenge in Rolla, Missouri, here are some things to know before you go.
What is Stonehenge in Rolla, Missouri?
The Stonehenge monument in Rolla, Missouri, is a half-scale replica of England’s famous prehistoric monument, located on the campus of Missouri University of Science and Technology. The roadside attraction was built as an engineering project showcasing the university’s advanced stone-cutting technology.
Where is the Stonehenge replica located in Missouri?
The Stonehenge replica is located on the Missouri S&T campus near the intersection of 14th Street and Bishop Avenue in Rolla, Missouri, directly along Historic Route 66. Park in the lot for Missouri S&T Observatory and walk the short path to this roadside attraction.
Why was Rolla’s Stonehenge built?
The project was created to demonstrate the capabilities of Missouri S&T’s high-pressure water-jet stone-cutting technology. Construction began in the early 1980s, using approximately 160 tons of Georgia granite carved by university researchers and students.
The monument was dedicated on June 20, 1984, during the summer solstice. The dedication ceremony even included a visiting Druid from England, adding a bit of fun and pageantry to the occasion.
Is it an exact replica of Stonehenge?
No. The Rolla version is a partial, half-scale recreation of the original Stonehenge rather than an exact copy. While inspired by the original monument in England, it incorporates modern engineering features and educational elements that help explain how Stonehenge functions as a solar calendar.
