Discover the this Shell Station Muffler Man Head in Atlanta, Illinois, right near Route 66!

Atlanta has long been a must-stop for road trippers and roadside attraction fans cruising the Mother Road. With its famous Paul Bunyon muffler man holding a hot dog, the smiley face water tower, and the brand-new American Giants Museum, this little town packs big roadside charm.

Now, tucked inside a Shell gas station is another gem that’s become an attraction of its own. In a hallway leading to the restrooms and Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, you’ll find a mural celebrating the town’s highlights, featuring the Palms Grill, the smiley water tower, a Route 66 shield, and the phrase “Welcoming the World with a Smile!” But what really brings it to life is a bright red display case housing an authentic, full-sized Muffler Man head!

Muffler Men are fiberglass giants, standing 14 to 25 feet tall, that were built between 1963 and 1972 to draw attention to businesses across America. This particular head has quite a story—it originally came from a roadside attraction in Southern California, passed through to an artist in San Diego, appeared at Burning Man in the 2000s, and finally landed in Atlanta thanks to American Giants in 2018. By 2021, it found its home here on Route 66, where it now greets visitors with a larger-than-life presence.
