In Santa Fe’s historic Barrio de Analco, you’ll find a building that’s not just old—it’s ancient by U.S. standards. San Miguel Chapel is widely recognized as “the oldest church in the United States.” While some debate the title, others refer to it more specifically as “The Oldest Catholic Religious Structure in the USA, on its Original Foundation, Still Holding Services” or “The Oldest Church in the Continental United States.”

San Miguel Chapel’s story begins in the early 1600s, with oral tradition pointing to its construction around 1610. Built under the guidance of Franciscan friars and the skilled hands of Tlaxcalan laborers, it served as a spiritual home for soldiers, workers, and Indigenous residents in the Barrio de Analco, now a national historic district.

The chapel has weathered centuries of change. It was partially destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 but rose from the ashes in 1710, rebuilt by Governor José Chacón. Over the years, it has stood as a silent witness to colonial rule under Spain and Mexico, and later to statehood in the United States. Its walls have seen everything from religious ceremonies to military services, and today it continues to host worship and cultural events.

Some highlights include:

  • The San José Bell: Weighing 780 pounds, this church bell said to have been cast in Spain in 1356, using melted gold and silver from Catholic households. It was brought to Santa Fe in 1692 and now resides inside the chapel. Tradition says ringing the bell ensures you’ll return to Santa Fe.
  • The Altar Screen: An intricate 18th-century work of Spanish colonial art, the altar screen is as stunning as it is historic. Its craftsmanship adds a striking focal point to the church’s simple adobe style.
  • Historic Statues and Art: Among the treasures is a statue of San Miguel, carved in Mexico around 1700 and brought to the chapel by Franciscan friars.
