The Route 66 Welcome to Weatherford Monument in Weatherford, Oklahoma, welcomes travelers to a town that proudly connects its Route 66 roots with a legacy in space exploration.

Weatherford is the hometown of Thomas P. Stafford, a lieutenant general and one of NASA’s most accomplished astronauts. He commanded Gemini VI, Apollo 10, and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, helping pave the way for international cooperation in space. His legacy lives on at the Stafford Air & Space Museum, one of the most comprehensive air and space museums in the central United States.

That connection has earned Weatherford the nickname “Space City,” and you’ll see it throughout town. Along Route 66, keep an eye out for murals, the giant Route 66 spaceman, the Space City Centennial Monument, and three Route 66 Space City signs in red, white, and blue.

The Welcome to Weatherford Monument serves as a clear marker that you’ve arrived. The obelisk-style structure stands on an island in the middle of a traffic circle near the Heartland of America Museum. It’s flanked by “WEATHERFORD” lettering and Route 66 shields, and topped with a celestial-themed “Space City” sign featuring a space capsule. Stop by during the day or after dark, when the monument is lit up and easy to spot.
