Route 66 Postcard Mural

Hamel, Illinois

IllinoisRoadside Attraction

In preparation for the 2026 Route 66 Centennial, many cities across the Mother Road have had initiatives to add new attractions that celebrate their place on the Main Street of America. One such project is the Route 66 Postcard Trail where you’ll find this Route 66 Postcard Mural in Hamel, Illinois.

The Americana-themed murals feature pictorial highlights and historical quips in red, white, blue, and gold. Each is reminiscent of the type of imagery you would find on a postcard.

Hamel’s postcard mural can be found on the backside of Route 66 Creamery, across from the  Six on 66 Monument. Some of the images on the mural include:

  • A cross representing the 1931 Saint Paul Lutheran Church (also known as the ‘Church of the Neon Cross’)
  • Hamel’s water tower
  • A bicycle representing the Madison County Bike Trail
  • A 1950s car
  • The 1820-1852 Hamel School Log Cabin
  • A diner hamburger and ice cream sundae, representing local restaurants like Wheezy’s Grill (formerly Hamel ‘Tourist’ Haven) and Route 66 Creamery
  • An outline of Illinois with a star marking the town’s location

Find more of these murals across the “last 100 miles” or Route 66 in Illinois. Other postcard murals can be found in Virden, Girard, Farmersville, Carlinville, Litchfield, Gillespie, Mount Olive, Staunton, Livingston, Edwardsville, Collinsville, and Granite City.
