New MexicoRoadside Attraction

Don’t drive past this attraction on your road trip: the Route 66 Monument in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

The Route 66 Monument in Tucumcari, New Mexico was dedicated in 1997 as a tribute to the Mother Road’s past, present, and future and Tucumcari’s place within.

Titled “The Mother Road,” the outdoor sculpture was commissioned from sculptor Tom Coffin by Tucumcari, the New Mexico Highway Department, and the New Mexico Arts Commission. The shiny, chrome design is made to look like a tail fin you’d find on a classic car from the 1950s or 60s. At the top is a stylized “66” and the sandstone base is accentuated with a depiction of a winding two-lane road.

You can find this New Mexico Route 66 roadside attraction facing the road outside of the Tucumcari Convention Center and around the corner from the town’s Route 66 Museum.
