Know Before You Go
To make the most of your visit to the Route 66 Ampersand Sculpture in Springfield, Missouri, here are some things to know before you go.
Where is this Route 66 Ampersand Sculpture located?
This Route 66 ampersand sculpture is in front of the Maverik (formerly Kum & Go) at 1810 E. Kearney St. in Springfield, Missouri, at the corner of Kearney Street and Glenstone Avenue, right where Route 66 turns south along Glenstone Avenue.
Is there parking?
Yes. Park in the Maverik lot to view the sculpture. The lot is open around the clock.
Why is there an ampersand?
The sculptures were commissioned by Kum & Go, a Midwest convenience store chain, as part of their “Where & Means More” branding. The ampersand represents the typographical character in Kum & Go’s name, and the sculptures were placed at select locations to reflect local identity alongside the company’s core values.
Where can you find the other ampersand sculptures on Route 66?
A second ampersand sculpture is located at the Maverik at 3434 W. Chestnut Expressway in Springfield. This sculpture features additional local imagery including the Gillioz Theatre, local high schools, and Springfield-Style Cashew Chicken.
Another sculpture in Joplin, Missouri, is located at 3434 S. Range Line Road, on the north side of the Maverik convenience store. The Joplin sculpture highlights important local people, places, and events including the city’s mining industry, Route 66, and the outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. It also references Joplin’s reputation for strength and resilience following the devastating May 2011 tornado.
