The oldest operating Del Taco, still serving since 1964, sits in Barstow, California. Known as Del Taco #1, it’s the longest-running restaurant in the chain and still carries a local flavor all its own.

Del Taco traces its roots to Ed Hackbarth, an Air Force veteran who first worked for Glen Bell (of Taco Bell fame) managing Bell’s Hamburgers in the 1950s. By 1961, Hackbarth struck out on his own, opening the very first Del Taco (then called “Casa Del Taco”) in nearby Yermo. That original location is long closed, but the Barstow restaurants that followed live on.

In 1964, Hackbarth teamed up with David Jameson to expand and eventually franchise the brand. By 1976, the pair sold Del Taco, which had grown to about 50 locations. While the company went on to grow into a nationwide chain with more than 500 restaurants, Hackbarth held onto his Barstow stores. Three Del Tacos in town are still operated by the founder today, and each has its own special menu items you won’t find at other locations.

The Barstow Del Taco #1 has been remodeled over the years, but it remains a throwback to the early days of the chain. Inside, you’ll even find displays that share the story of Del Taco’s history.
