On Route 66 in Newberry Springs, just steps from the Bagdad Café, a weathered neon sign still rises against the desert sky. The Old Henning Motel Sign advertises an accommodation that is long gone, but the sign itself has become a roadside relic that draws travelers, photographers, and film fans to the area.

The Newberry Springs motel opened in 1947 and operated through the mid-century years, even making a cameo alongside its neighbor, the Bagdad Café, in the 1987 film Bagdad Café. By then, Interstate 40 had long bypassed Route 66, and the motel eventually closed and was demolished in 2015.

Today, only the old, faded, neon sign remains, a yellow relic that announces “Henning Free TV” below a towering statement of “MOTEL.”

According to a Facebook post, the motel in Newberry Springs was never actually the Henning Motel. The famous neon sign originally stood in Barstow, where Lucille Henning ran the Henning Motel on East Main Street starting in 1932. When that property was cleared for redevelopment in the 1950s, the sign was salvaged and moved down Route 66 to the tiny West Winds Motel in Newberry Springs.
