What is the Neon on Main Route 66 Neon Sign Project in Stroud, Oklahoma?
The Neon on Main project in Stroud, Oklahoma, is a citywide effort to install and restore neon signs along Route 66 to create a fully lit historic corridor. Funded by a $999,600 grant from the Oklahoma Route 66 Commission, in anticipation of the Route 66 Centennial, the project added more than 40 true neon signs to businesses throughout town. Inspired by the glowing Route 66 scenes in the film Cars, the goal was to build on Stroud’s existing neon history (like the Skyliner Motel and Rock Cafe) and create a consistent, neon-lit experience for travelers, especially after dark.
