The museum offers a state-by-state journey through all eight states the original Route 66 traversed, from Illinois through California. Exhibits include vintage vehicles, authentic gas pumps, roadside signs, large murals, audio kiosks with personal accounts of the road, and recreated scenes of historic diners, motels and service stations.
It’s part of the larger Elk City Museums Complex, which includes other museums, including the Old Town Museum, Farm and Ranch Museum, and Blacksmith Museum.

When is the museum open? Does it close for holidays?
The National Route 66 Museum is open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is seasonally open on Sunday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Memorial Day to Labor Day. From Labor Day to Memorial Day it is closed on Sundays. It is also closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday), Christmas Eve, and Christmas.
