The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is one of the top places to learn about the history, art, and culture of the American West. Open since 1955, it holds a large collection of Western art, artifacts, and exhibits that cover everything from cowboy life to Native American history.

Inside, you’ll find galleries focused on the American cowboy, rodeo, and Western art, along with works by artists like Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. One of the most recognizable pieces is The End of the Trail by James Earle Fraser, which has become a symbol of the museum.

A major highlight is Prosperity Junction, a full-scale turn-of-the-century town with streets you can walk through and buildings like a railroad depot, blacksmith shop, homes, and a schoolhouse. It gives a clear look at what life was like in a Western cattle town.

For families, the Liichokoshkomo’ outdoor area adds hands-on activities, including a tipi, playground, and interactive exhibits focused on Western and Native American cultures.

The museum also hosts major events throughout the year, including the Prix de West art exhibition and the Western Heritage Awards, which recognize contributions to Western film, music, and literature.

Note: The museum is currently featuring Route 66: From Trails to Truck Stops, an exhibit running through May 3, 2026, that explores the history of the Mother Road and how it connects to the broader story of travel and movement across the American West.
