What is Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie?
Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is the first federally designated national tallgrass prairie in the United States. Established in 1996 on the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, the prairie is undergoing one of the largest ecological restoration projects in the country, transforming former industrial land back into native prairie, wetlands, and woodlands.
Where is Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie located?
Midewin is located at 30239 S. State Route 53 in Wilmington, Illinois, about an hour southwest of Chicago.
Are there bison at Midewin?
Yes! One of the prairie’s biggest attractions is its American bison herd, which was reintroduced in 2015 as part of the restoration effort. Visitors can often view the bison from designated overlooks and trails, though sightings are never guaranteed.
How many trails are available?
Midewin offers approximately 33 miles of non-motorized trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing. Trails range from crushed limestone paths to mowed grass routes through restored prairie landscapes.
Come prepared with water for your hike as there are no water fountains on site. Visit the park’s website for maps and safety information.
Is there a visitor center?
Yes. The Welcome Center features exhibits on the prairie’s natural and cultural history, trail maps, interpretive displays, and a bookstore operated by the Midewin Interpretive Association.
What are the hours?
While the trails are open daily (4:00 AM to 10:00 PM) the Welcome Center has more limited hours and is open 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday to Saturday from May through October. It is closed on Saturdays from November through April.
