In the 1930s, Lester Dill turned a series of caves in Stanton, Missouri, into a roadside attraction known as Meramec Caverns. To draw in travelers, he used a simple but effective form of advertising: painted barns. Artist Jim Gauer spent nearly 60 years traveling across 14 states (including Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee,) painting the now-iconic Meramec Caverns Barn Signs until his retirement in 2012.

While not all of these barn advertisements were located along Route 66, many were placed where travelers on the Mother Road would see them, since Meramec Caverns itself sits right off the highway.

At one time, more than 400 Meramec Caverns barns stood across the country. Today, fewer than 50 remain.

Only four of those surviving barns are along Route 66, with others located in places like Pontiac, Illinois, and Conway and St. Clair, Missouri. In Oklahoma, just one remains, located on the west side of Chandler.

In April 2023, a windstorm damaged the Oklahoma barn, tearing off the roof and destroying part of the historic mural. Restoration efforts began soon after, led by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, which secured permission from the property owner and Les Turilli, the third-generation owner of Meramec Caverns. Funding support came from the Tillison Christian Opportunities Foundation and Cycle 66 in Edmond, allowing repairs to be completed in 2025.

The mural was restored by Oklahoma artist Dr. Bob Palmer, who has created nearly 2,000 murals across the U.S. and internationally.

You can find the Oklahoma Meramec Caverns Barn Sign along Route 66 just east of S3400 Road. The mural is easiest to spot when traveling eastbound. Westbound travelers may only be able to see it in their rearview mirrors.

Fewer than 50 of the original barn signs are known to survive anywhere in the country.

What is the history of the Meramec Caverns barn signs?

Meramec Caverns is a cave network and tourist attraction near Stanton, Missouri, on Route 66. In 1933, entrepreneur Lester Dill purchased the caverns and began offering tours. To promote his attraction, Dill struck an innovative deal with farmers along America’s new network of highways: he would paint their barns for free in exchange for permission to paint a large Meramec Caverns advertisement on the roof. He and his employee Jim Gauer painted close to 400 barns across during the height of the campaign, with signs concentrated along Route 66 and other major travel corridors through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Arkansas. Barn rooftop advertising was outlawed in 1968, but the existing Meramec Caverns signs were exempt and could be repainted as long as the barn structure remains standing.

Where can you park to see this roadside attraction?

There is no dedicated parking to see this roadside attraction. Pull over to the side of the road and park. Be careful around other cars and traffic.
