In honor of Route 66′ approaches its’s 100th birthday, communities across the country are marking the milestone with Route 66 Centennial Monuments being installed all along the historic highway. These towering 16-foot structures are impossible to miss. Each features a glowing, double-sided Route 66 shield lit with internal LED lights, proudly displaying the two-letter abbreviation for the state and the centennial years: 1926–2026. A display box on the pole identifies the specific location and includes a QR code linking to local stories, history, and visitor information.
Who is behind the Route 66 Centennial Monument Project?
The Route 66 Centennial Monuments are manufactured by Oklahoma City’s VOX Industries, which collaborated with Oklahoma City public artist Stan Carroll on the design. G&S Sign Services, also of Oklahoma City, fabricates the monuments and leads installation efforts around the country. The project is part of the U.S. Route 66 Centennial Commission and the Oklahoma Route 66 Centennial Commission.
Where is the Route 66 Centennial Monument in Hydro, Oklahoma?
The Hydro monument is located on U.S. Rte 66 at Lucille’s Historic Highway Gas Station, a historic Bungalow Craftsman-style station built around the time Route 66 became a highway in the 1920s. The station was operated for over 60 years by Lucille Hamons, whose legendary hospitality earned her the nickname “Mother of the Mother Road.”
