Know Before You Go
To make the most of your visit to Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico, here are some things to know before you go.
What is Loretto Chapel?
Loretto Chapel is a historic Gothic Revival chapel in Santa Fe that is best known for its famous “Miraculous Staircase,” a spiral staircase that has fascinated visitors for more than a century.
Where is Loretto Chapel located?
The chapel is located at 207 Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe, just a short walk from Santa Fe Plaza in the heart of historic downtown Santa Fe.
Why is Loretto Chapel famous?
The chapel is famous for its spiral staircase, often called the Miraculous Staircase. The wooden staircase makes two complete 360-degree turns and rises about 20 feet to the choir loft. For many years, visitors believed it had no visible means of support, leading to legends and stories about its construction.
What is the mystery of the Miraculous Staircase?
According to local legend, the Sisters of Loretto prayed a novena to St. Joseph after discovering there was no practical way to reach the choir loft. On the ninth day, a mysterious carpenter appeared, built the staircase, and disappeared without accepting payment. Because his identity was never confirmed, many believed the builder was St. Joseph himself.
Whether the staircase is miraculous depends on personal belief. Engineers have since proposed explanations for how the staircase supports itself, but questions remain about the builder’s identity and the type of wood used. The mystery continues to be part of the chapel’s appeal.
Can visitors climb the staircase?
No. To protect the historic structure, visitors are not allowed to climb the staircase. It can be viewed from the chapel floor.
What are the hours?
The chapel is generally open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, though it may close temporarily for weddings or special events. The last admission time is 4:30 PM.
Is there parking nearby?
There are several public parking lots and garages within walking distance of the plaza. Metered street parking is also available, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak times.
