Many travelers wrap up their Route 66 adventure at the famous “End of the Trail” sign on the Santa Monica Pier. While it’s a great place for a photo and a symbolic finish, the pier isn’t actually the official end of the Mother Road. The true western terminus lies about a mile inland, at the corner of Olympic Boulevard and Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica, where a Historic Route 66 End Sign now marks the spot.

Over the years, Route 66’s finish line shifted a few times. When the highway was first established in 1926, the official end was in downtown Los Angeles at 7th Street and Broadway. It stayed there until 1936, when the route was extended west to Olympic and Lincoln in Santa Monica. That intersection became the recognized western terminus of Route 66, and it still holds that title today.

The site is now marked by a brown road sign reading Historic California US 66 Route End. Mel’s Drive-In sits right on the corner, where you can toast the end of your road trip with a classic burger and milkshake and admire the sign from the front door (Mel’s also has several “Route 66 Ends Here” photos ops of their own). And if you’re just beginning your journey eastbound toward Chicago, you’ll spot a matching Historic Route 66 Begin sign across the street, ready to send you off down the road.
