Galena Mining and Historical Museum

Galena, Kansas, a town named after the lead ore “galena” that once thrived here, is a Route 66 town with a fascinating history. Founded in the late 19th century during a surge in lead and zinc mining, Galena quickly grew as miners flocked to tap into its rich resources. The establishment of Route 66 in 1926 only added to Galena’s historical significance, as it passed right through the heart of the town. Housed in the charming old Missouri-Kansas-Texas (“KATY”) Railroad Company train depot—built in 1904—the museum has been a beloved community fixture since it opened in 1984.
