Fantastic Caverns in Springfield, Missouri, bills itself as “America’s Ride-Thru Cave.” It’s one of only four ride-through caves in the entire world, and the only one in North America where visitors never have to leave their seat.

The tour takes place aboard a Jeep-drawn tram that follows the path of an ancient underground riverbed deep into the Ozark cave system. Over the course of about 55 minutes, a guide leads the way through chambers filled with towering columns stretching from floor to ceiling, delicate soda straws glistening with minerals, and tiny cave pearls tucked in crystal-clear water. The cave holds steady at a comfortable 60°F year-round, making it a welcome escape in both the heat of summer and the chill of winter.

The history of the cave is just as interesting as the formations inside. The cavern was discovered in 1862 by John Knox and his hunting dog. Knox kept the discovery quiet for years to prevent Civil War governments from mining it for saltpeter, finally advertising in the Springfield paper in 1867 for someone to help explore it. The first official exploration took place on February 14, 1867. But it was the second group, twelve members of the Springfield Women’s Athletic Club, who arrived two weeks later with torches, lanterns, ropes, and ladders, who carved their names into the rock and are considered the true first explorers.

Fantastic Caverns sits about five miles north of Historic Route 66 in Springfield and is open 362 days a year (closed only on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day). It’s one of the most unique stops you can add to a Route 66 road trip through the Ozarks.
