El Rancho Grande Mexican Food Restaurant in Tulsa, Oklahoma has been serving classic Tex-Mex staples to locals and Route 66 travelers since 1953.

El Rancho Grande originally opened in 1951 on Boulder Avenue, but moved to its current location on Route 66 two years later, where it has been serving delicious fare ever since. Ruby Rodrigues opened and operated the restaurant until her retirement in 1982. In 1984 John and Jeff Walden took over the family-owned restaurant and still run it today.

Stop by this Route 66 Mexican restaurant to take photos of the historic neon sign (restored in 2009) and stop in for lunch or dinner on the Mother Road. El Rancho Grande is known for having “Tulsa’s Best” cheese enchiladas and margaritas. Or try any one of the dishes on their extensive menu, many of which still use the original recipes. Find quesadillas, nachos, tamales, burritos, tacos, seafood specialties, and combination platters.

One popular order is a dish called the Night Hawk, which comes with two cheese and onion enchiladas covered with chili con carne and cheddar plus one Grande’s soft cheese taco topped with chili con queso. It was named one of the “Five Greatest Mexican Meals in the United States” by Gustavo Arellanoโ€™s book, โ€œTaco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America.”

  1. A solid choice for Tex Mex in Tulsa! I had a delicious chile relleno but definitely want to go back and try the Night Hawk next time. The staff was friendly and the waiter made sure my water and soda were filled after I spent a long day out in the hot sun.
