In 1908, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad opened the El Garces Harvey House Hotel and Depot in Needles, California. Built after the original wooden depot burned in 1906, the new station spared no expense. Designed in the Classical Revival style by architect Francis W. Wilson, the concrete structure looked more like a grand East Coast civic building than a desert train stop. Its symmetrical facade, paired Tuscan columns, and wide verandas made it one of the most impressive depots in the West.

El Garces was operated by the Fred Harvey Company and quickly earned the title “the Crown Jewel” of the Harvey House chain. Known for impeccable service and elegance, the lunchroom featured two horseshoe-shaped counters and could seat 140 people. Guests dined with real linen and silver, distinctive china, and fresh flowers—small touches that set the Harvey Houses apart. For the famous Harvey Girls, this was a top assignment.

The hotel and restaurant closed in 1949 as passenger rail service declined, but the building continued as Santa Fe Railway offices until 1988. Left vacant, it faced possible demolition until the Friends of El Garces formed in 1993 and pushed to save it. Their efforts succeeded, and the City of Needles purchased the building in 1999. In 2002, El Garces was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After years of restoration, the El Garces reopened in 2014 as the El Garces Intermodal Transportation Facility. Today, it serves Amtrak’s Southwest Chief passengers, Needles Area Transit, and the local community. While it no longer operates as a Harvey House hotel, the building remains an important landmark, both for the town of Needles and for Route 66 travelers who want to step into the history of rail and road.

Outside, you’ll also find a World War I memorial cannon and marker, and a decorative Route 66 bench.
