For one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches on Route 66, in one of the most historically significant locations on Route 66, head to Druff’s in Springfield, Missouri.

Springfield is known as the Birthplace of Route 66. On April 30, 1926, the name “Route 66” was first proposed for the new highway connecting Chicago to Los Angeles right here in Springfield, in the offices of the Woodruff Building at the corner of Park Central East and Jefferson Avenue. The building still stands today, marked with a historical plaque and home to apartments and street-level businesses. One of those businesses is Druff’s, a grilled cheese diner with a name that pays direct homage to both the building and the man behind it, civic leader John T. Woodruff.

The menu at Druff’s focuses on grilled cheese done right, with options for breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, the Backwoods combines cream cheese, pepper jack, sweet jalapeño jam, egg, and chicken, while the Jacoby stacks cheddar, breakfast sausage, egg, and hash browns. At lunch, the Crump Classic goes simple and satisfying with colby, gouda, and cheddar, while the Mitch Martin layers house pimento cheese, turkey, and avocado. Every sandwich comes with chips or fresh fruit, with the option to upgrade to house tomato soup, soup of the day, a salad, or hashbrowns. The specials board is worth a look too for a unique offering of the day.

Beyond the grilled cheese, the menu also includes breakfast bowls, waffles, French toast, biscuits and gravy, salads, and soups. Open since 2016, Druff’s serves a very modern meal in a very historic building, a combination that makes it worth a stop on any Route 66 road trip.
