Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza

Tulsa, Oklahoma

OklahomaRoadside Attraction

Cyrus Avery is known as the father of Route 66. The Tulsa resident played a major role in creating the route while a member of the board that was appointed to create the Federal Highway System. He pushed for the establishment of the U.S. Highway 66 Association to pave and promote the highway that is so famous today. His legacy is celebrated in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza.

The first thing you’ll notice is the Route 66 Skywalk – an overpass bridge that connects a parking lot to the plaza – that is decorated with a giant Route 66 shield logo. Cross the bridge to find one of the centerpieces of the plaza, a large bronze sculpture entitled “East Meets West.” Created by artist Robert Summers it depicts the Avery family traveling west in a Model T Ford and encountering an eastbound horse-drawn wagon. Surrounding the sculpture you’ll find flags from the eight states in which Route 66 travels through.

You’ll also find the original 1915 Eleventh Street Bridge bridge and a neon sign park that features three replicas of classic neon signs that once stood outside Tulsa-area motels: Tulsa Auto Court, the Will Rogers Motor Court, and the Oil Capital Motel.

Future plans for Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza include a new visitor’s center and Route 66 museum that features exhibits, historical perspectives, and a gift shop.
