Know Before You Go
To make the most of your visit to Cool Springs Station in Golden Valley, Arizona, here are some things to know before you go.
What is Cool Springs Station?
Cool Springs Station is one of the most iconic stops on Arizona’s stretch of Route 66. Originally built in the mid-1920s, the stone service station served travelers crossing the rugged Black Mountains between Kingman and Oatman. Today, it operates as a restored Route 66 attraction featuring a gift shop, museum displays, snacks, souvenirs, and plenty of Route 66 nostalgia.
Where is Cool Springs Station located?
The station is located at 8275 Oatman Road (Historic Route 66) in Golden Valley, Arizona, about 20 miles west of Kingman and just east of the famous Sitgreaves Pass. Its remote location makes it a natural stopping point before or after driving one of the most scenic sections of the Mother Road.
What is the history of Cool Springs?
Cool Springs opened during the early years of Route 66 and quickly became an important stop for motorists navigating the steep grades and sharp curves of the Black Mountains. The station eventually included a café, cabins, and fuel services. After Route 66 was bypassed in the 1950s, the business declined and was abandoned. A fire left the building in ruins, and the remains were later used in the film Universal Soldier before being blown up on screen. In 2001, Route 66 enthusiast Ned Leuchtner purchased the site and meticulously restored it using historic photographs, reopening the station in 2004.
What are the hours?
Though generally open 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, daily, hours can vary by season. It’s best to check in advance, especially during holidays or extreme weather. Even if the business is closed you can still pull over to check out the architecture and take photos.
