The California Route 66 Museum in Victorville is a must-see stop for anyone traveling the Mother Road through the Mojave Desert. Opened in 1995 by Old Town Victorville Heritage Preservation, Inc., the museum is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Route 66 and the communities it touched.

You’ll find this Route 66 museum inside a building with plenty of its own history. Originally constructed in 1930 as the Red Rooster Café, Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge, the site later served as Les Pyrénées Restaurant and even appeared in Neil Diamond’s 1980 film The Jazz Singer, standing in for a Texas cafe.

Today, the museum spans more than 4,500 square feet of interactive exhibits. Visitors can explore displays on both Route 66 and Victorville’s history, then step into immersive photo-ready settings. Slide into a booth at a recreated 1950s diner, climb into a genuine 1917 Ford Model T, or pose with wigs and sunglasses inside a colorful 1960s VW Love Bus. Don’t miss the quirky outhouse, the vintage caboose, the outside murals, or the “End of the Trail” sign.

Beyond the photo ops, the museum features historic photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia that highlight the road’s impact on the local economy and culture. The on-site library and gift shop are stocked with Route 66 books, DVDs, and souvenirs to take a piece of the journey home.

Friendly volunteers are always on hand to share stories about the Mother Road and its roadside attractions.
