Bud’s Tire & Wheel in Springfield, Missouri, is a working racing tire and wheel shop, but it’s also one of the most welcoming and character-filled stops on Route 66.

Leslie “Bud” Perry opened the business in 1958 on the corner of W. College Street and Grant Avenue, making it one of Springfield’s first shops to offer custom wheels. Over the decades, Bud transformed the building into something far beyond a tire shop, adding colorful murals that turned the exterior into a destination in its own right. One mural shows a cluster of classic cars gathered in front of the building. Another depicts a mechanic working on a race car beneath the American Racer logo. A third shows classic cars parked at the Jordan Valley Drive-In, with a marquee reading “Now Showing: Bud’s Funnies” and a black-and-white still of the Three Stooges on the big screen. There’s also a vintage yellow car on the property that visitors are invited to sign, a living autograph book commemorating the Route 66 Centennial year.

Bud’s contributions to Route 66 didn’t go unnoticed. At the 2013 Birthplace of Route 66 Festival, he received the John T. Woodruff Award, which recognizes Springfield residents for outstanding contributions to Route 66. Bud passed away in 2017, but his son Mike Perry carries the legacy forward, keeping the doors open and continuing the tradition of welcoming anyone who wants to pull over, look around, and be part of the story.
