The site currently features a sign marking Springfield as the Birthplace of Route 66, a six-story Route 66 mural, and a historical marker commemorating the Colonial Hotel, which once stood on this site.
What will the completed plaza include?
The completed plaza will feature a sculptural work, mural, and interpretive kiosk, reclaiming the corner as a wayfinder for travelers and a place of pilgrimage for Route 66 enthusiasts. The centerpiece will be The Ghost of the Colonial Hotel, an illuminated steel sculpture by internationally renowned artist Juan Garaizabal. A 10-by-14-foot mosaic map of Route 66 designed by local artist Christine Schilling of MosaicaRose and an interpretive kiosk shaped like oversized car keys, designed by Pinnacle Sign Company, will complete the space.

Plenty of free street parking, free parking lots, and paid lots are available surrounding the area. Read street signs when parking, as spots may be closed for special events, restricted, or time-restricted during business hours. Many spots have a two-hour limit weekday mornings and afternoons.
