Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Springfield, Missouri is not your average sporting goods store. It’s the original, the largest, and the one that started it all. It also happens to be the number one tourist attraction in Missouri, drawing more than four million visitors a year.

The story begins in 1971, when a young Johnny Morris, frustrated by the lack of quality fishing tackle available locally, rented a U-Haul and drove across the country filling it with premium gear. He returned to Springfield and set up shop in eight feet of space in his father’s liquor store. That modest beginning grew into what is now a nearly 500,000-square-foot landmark that is far more than a retail store.

Walking through the front doors feels like stepping straight into the Ozarks. Seven freshwater aquariums, cascading indoor waterfalls, a live swamp complete with alligators and turtles, and lifelike wildlife mounts fill the space with the sights and sounds of the outdoors. When you’re ready to shop, the selection covers fishing, hunting, camping, boating, archery, hiking, apparel, and more, with expert staff throughout and an on-site archery and shooting range if you want to test something before you buy.

Beyond the retail floor, the campus includes several free museums and attractions. The National Archery Hall of Fame houses more than 1,500 artifacts, including a handmade bow made by Apache leader Geronimo. The NRA National Sporting Arms Museum traces the history of firearms in America from pre-Colonial times to the present, with highlights like Teddy Roosevelt’s hunting rifle. The Bass Pro Shops Motorsports Museum features racing memorabilia and actual race cars, including Dale Earnhardt’s No. 3 Daytona 500 championship car from 1998. And the Fine Gun Room (available at only a handful of Bass Pro locations nationwide) carries some of the rarest and most valuable firearms in the store.

Connected to the store is the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium, a world-class attraction featuring 35,000 live fish, reptiles, mammals, and birds across 1.5 million gallons of water. When hunger hits, Hemingway’s Blue Water Café is a full-service restaurant inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s love of saltwater fishing, and a snack bar with fudge and goodies is available on the first floor. Whether you’re an avid outdoorsman or just looking for something unlike anything else on Route 66, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Springfield is worth every minute you give it.
