Where Route 66 meets Interstate 15, travelers will find one of the most unique roadside stops in the desert: Barstow Station. Built from a collection of old rail cars, Barstow Station has been serving road trippers, bus tours, and curious visitors since it first opened in 1975.

The idea came from Fred Rosenberg, who originally operated one of the largest McDonald’s restaurants in the world right here in Barstow. Wanting something bigger and more memorable, he transformed a set of retired train cars into a roadside complex designed to look like a Santa Fe depot. The result was a one-of-a-kind station that quickly became a landmark for anyone passing through town.

Today, Barstow Station continues to be a popular rest stop along Route 66. Inside, you’ll find more than a dozen vendors offering everything from snacks and souvenirs to full meals. McDonald’s has been a staple here since 1969, joined by other big names like Subway, Popeye’s, Wetzel’s Pretzels, and Dunkin’ Donuts, as well as local favorites like Jed’s Jerky, Alien Boba, and the Oriental Gift Shop. There’s even a liquor store, barbershop, and a lottery counter. And don’t leave without getting your fortune told by the authentic Zoltar Fortune Teller.

Greyhound and FlixBus both stop here, thousands of tour buses roll through every year, and Tesla drivers can recharge at one of the largest charging stations in the country just across the road. With clean restrooms, Wi-Fi, and even lounges for drivers and tour guides, it’s a place built with travelers in mind.
