Atlanta Public Library and Clock Tower

Atlanta, Illinois

IllinoisRoadside Attraction

While in Atlanta, Illinois look out for this local landmark: the Atlanta Public Library and Clock Tower.

The Atlanta Public Library was built in 1908 and has operated continuously as a library ever since. The limestone building is unique in shape with eight sides, making it one of only a few octagonal-shaped public libraries in Illinois. Each side is symmetrical except the front, which is enhanced with a classical portico with Doric columns and a round-arched entrance. The library was added to the National Register of Historical Places in December 1979.

Located next to the Atlanta Public Library and Museum is the Atlanta Clock Tower.

The 36-foot-tall stone tower houses a 1909 Seth Thomas clock. It was originally part of the now-gone Atlanta High School building but moved to its current location in front of the library in the 1980s. The clock is wound by hand each week by residents who are known as the “Keepers of the Clock.”
