Rising 250 feet above the Mojave Desert, Amboy Crater is a nearly perfect volcanic cinder cone sitting just off Historic Route 66. Formed of ash and cinders some 79,000 years ago, this dormant volcano is part of one of the youngest volcanic fields in the United States and was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1973 for both its visual beauty and geological significance.

The crater is striking in its symmetry, with a wide breach on its western side where basaltic lava once poured across 24 square miles. That ancient eruption left behind lava lakes, collapsed tubes, spatter cones, and rugged basalt flows that make the surrounding landscape look like something from another world. It’s no wonder Hollywood came calling, Amboy Crater was even featured in the 1959 film Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Today, travelers can park just off Route 66 and take advantage of facilities including picnic tables, restrooms, and an accessible ramada overlook with sweeping views. For those who want to stretch their legs, the Amboy Crater Trail offers a 3-mile round-trip hike across the lava field and up to the rim. The path begins gently before climbing steeply to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the Mojave Desert, the Bristol Dry Lake, and the distant Marble Mountains. Along the way, rest stops help break up the climb, making it a manageable but memorable trek.

Amboy Crater sits about halfway between Barstow and Needles, roughly 66 miles from each, making it an easy detour for road trippers exploring the eastern Mojave along Route 66. Whether you stop for a picnic, take in the views from the overlook, or hike to the summit, this volcanic landmark is one of the desert’s most dramatic natural features and a must-see on your journey.

Know Before You Go

To make the most of your visit to the Amboy Crater in Amboy, California, here are some things to know before you go.

Where is Amboy Crater located?

Amboy Crater is located off Historic Route 66 in the Mojave Desert, about halfway between Barstow and Needles and just a bit further of a drive from Roy’s Motel & Cafe. Look for the sign on Route 66 and follow the short road to the parking lot.

When is the best time to visit Amboy Crater?

Plan your trek between October and April. Winter and early spring offer cooler temperatures and even wildflowers. Avoid summer, when temps often top 100°F. Extreme desert heat has made the trail dangerous, even deadly, for unprepared hikers. If you must go in summer, only attempt it at sunrise or sunset with plenty of water.

Is there an admission fee?

Nope—visiting Amboy Crater is completely free.

How long is the hike, and how difficult is it?

The Amboy Crater Trail is about 3 miles round-trip. It starts flat, then climbs steeply to the rim. Plan for 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on pace and photo stops. The hike is moderately difficult. The lava rocks can be sharp and uneven, and the last stretch is steep, but most hikers can handle it with good shoes, water, and sun protection.

What facilities are available?

You’ll find a large parking lot (big enough for RVs), restrooms, shaded and unshaded picnic tables, and an ADA-accessible ramada overlook with crater views.

What should you bring to hike Amboy Crater?

If you’re hiking Amboy Crater bring a sun hat, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, long sleeves, and plenty of water (at least a gallon per person), and turn back when you’re halfway through your supply. Also watch for rattlesnakes, desert lizards, and even old military explosives. Bring trekking poles if you’re unsteady with heights.
