Ambler’s Texaco Gas Station

Dwight, Illinois

IllinoisRoadside Attraction

Ambler’s Texaco Gas Station in Dwight, Illinois was built by Jack Shore in 1933 along historic Route 66. Also known as the Ambler-Becker Station, Vernon’s Texaco Station, or Becker’s Marathon Gas Station, the service station operated for around 66 years, making it the longest operating service station on The Mother Road.

The Route 66 gas station had several owners over the years, but was most notably run by longtime manager Basil “Tubby” Ambler. He operated the fueling station from 1938 to 1966 and is why this vintage gas station is called “Ambler’s.”

It looked like the end for this Route 66 attraction in 1999, when the fuel pumps were shut off for the last time. But this blast from the past lives on after being restored to its classic 1940s look, after being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and being awarded a Cost-Share Grant from the National Park Service Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program in 2002.

The vintage service station has been repaired and restored to its original look, with a white awning covering two bright red Texaco gas pumps. To the side, an added vintage-inspired billboard and plywood service station attendant complete the vintage look.

Inside the location now serves as the Dwight Visitor Center where you can find tools, equipment, a potbelly stove, an old cash register, old 7-Up and Coke bottles, and more memorabilia from the stop’s heyday.
