In the heart of the Mojave Desert, along Route 66 in Amboy, a larger-than-life mural and monument now stand as a tribute to Albert Okura—the businessman, dreamer, and “Chicken Man” behind the Juan Pollo restaurant chain, the Original McDonald’s Museum in San Bernardino, and, most importantly for travelers, the man who saved Amboy.

Okura purchased the fading desert town in 2005, determined to preserve its place on the Mother Road. For nearly two decades, he worked to keep Roy’s Motel and Café, its neon sign, and the historic gas station alive as a stop for road trippers crossing the desert. His unexpected passing in 2023 left behind a vision, but also a legacy now cemented, literally, on Route 66.

In November 2024, the Okura family, friends, and the Billy Holcomb Chapter of E Clampus Vitus unveiled a new monument and set of murals at Roy’s Motel & Cafe. The centerpiece is a towering 14-foot portrait of Albert Okura by artist John Cerney. The bold roadside artwork, along with a granite monument etched with the Okura family crest, ensures that every traveler who pauses in Amboy can learn about the man whose “destiny” was to keep this ghost town alive.

Okura believed in preserving symbols of Americana and saw Amboy as part of that destiny. Thanks to his efforts, the town didn’t disappear into the desert sands. Today, Amboy is still welcoming road trippers from around the world, with Roy’s neon sign shining bright and now a striking new tribute honoring the man who made it possible.
