Cuba, Missouri, known today as the “Route 66 Mural City,” has a rich history that stretches back to its days as a bustling railway town. This legacy is celebrated through one of its notable 3D murals, the 1873 Train Replica—a tribute to the railroad roots that once defined Cuba’s spirit.

Cuba’s railway story began in 1857 with the arrival of the St. Louis & San Francisco Railway, transforming the town into a key stop for trains carrying goods and passengers across Missouri. The railroad drove economic growth, energized local industries, and connected Cuba to major cities. Today, Cuba’s murals vividly capture scenes from that golden era of the railway alongside its Route 66 heritage, offering a window into a time when trains shaped the town’s prosperity and landscape.

The 1873 Train Replica stands as a monument to that impact. Commissioned by Viva Cuba, a local beautification group, it was installed in July 2008 within a decorative brick wall at the Viva Cuba Garden, right where Route 66 and Hwy 19 meet. This impressive 325-pound, 15-foot steel replica of a steam locomotive from 1873 was sculpted in three sections and expertly welded together by father-and-son team Glen and Curtis Tutterrow, preserving a piece of Cuba’s railway legacy for all to admire.
